CEDAR SHAKES AND SHINGLES
Manufactured from spruce, treated pine or cedar, wood shakes and shingles have been a popular choice for many years and is commonly seen in many Calgary neighborhoods.
Wood shakes are made by hand-splitting the wood which gives a more rustic look. A wood shingle is machine-cut with a tapered, trim and finished look.
The life expectancy of properly installed wood shingles is approximately the same as a high-quality asphalt shingle - around 30 years. However, they cost significantly more.
Both shingles and shakes require regular treatments wood preservatives that help limit or delay the wood from cracking, warping or drying out prematurely. Periodic fungicide treatments also limit the formation of fungus and mildew.
Shakes and shingles each have their own installation specifications and procedures that can installation more difficult, but they are normally easy to replace or repair.
Wood Shingle Lookalikes
New technologies in roofing have made it possible to achieve the look of wood shakes and shingles without the maintenance required. Lightweight concrete and polymer composite roofing materials have been introduced that look identical to wood shakes and shingles with more colour options and much less maintenance.
