Eave Protection Installation of eave protection places a sheet of plastic or felt along ridges, roof perimeters, flashings, valleys and shingles. Eave Protection is an essential for a properly functioning roof. In addition to performing as a waterproofing membrane, it adds additional protection against ice-damming. With the number of chinooks in southern Alberta - ice dams are a common occurrence. Once ice dams reach a certain size, melt water can back up and seep below the shingles. This can lead to water leaking into insulation, ceilings and exterior walls. Damage to drywall, paint and wall coverings can result in additional repairs. If the ice dam collapses – gutters and shingles might fall on to family members, neighbors, cars, pets, fences, garages, patio furniture and trees. A damp roof deck may cause the formation of mould and mildew - rotting the roof. This may not become visible until well after extensive damage has already been done. Underlayment Before the final installation of shingles, a special underlayment membrane is applied to the roof deck. Underlayment is an essential component of a quality roofing system. The underlayment provides a second line of defense against weather, leaking and fire. This membrane also allows the roof deck to breathe and assists with moisture release from within the home. This additional protection helps form seals around nail penetrations to further limit roof leaks. With specific roof slopes, underlayment is required to achieve fire resistant ratings from the Laboratories of Canada (ULC). To secure a fire-resistant rating of Class A or Class C – underlayment must be used in all applications. Shingles While all components a roofing system are integral to a well built and long life roof – the installation and type of shingles used will be the critical factor in determining the life of your roof. Asphalt shingles, wood shingles and shakes, metal roofs, concrete tile, slate and composite coverings all have different warranty periods. The launch of new roofing systems using plastics, rubbers, modified asphalts and other synthetics has triggered a renewed focus on warranty periods. While manufacturer’s warranties can range anywhere from 3 years to lifetime – shingles must be properly installed according to manufacturer specifications. Improperly installed roofing systems can void the manufacturer’s warranty. In addition to the manufacturer’s warranty, we also provide you with an installation warranty as an added level of consumer protection. Our Workmanship Warranty is good for a minimum of five years from date of installation. Edge Treatment Installed on the eave and rakes, edge treatment provides a professional finished look to your roof’s edge. More importantly, it facilitates more efficient water shedding as well. A drip edge of vinyl or metal is installed under the eave protection membrane. Along the rake, a metal or plastic drip edge is positioned over the underlayment or edge shield. |

Flashing
Vents, skylights, chimneys, cable and electrical conduit protruding from the roof can be some of your roof’s most leak prone areas. Flashing is placed around these openings to seal and redirect water from seams and joints and serves as an additional waterproofing barrier.
Flashing can be concealed or exposed. Concealed flashing is frequently flexible and adhesive backed, while exposed flashing is commonly uses sheet metal.
Ventilation
Proper venting is a key factor in the life expectancy of your shingles. Adequate air circulation is extremely important in reducing the possibility of leaking, curling, blistering, damp insulation and rotting wood.
We always check the building’s attic for the major signs of insufficient ventilation. These can include; stagnant air, mould/water stains on the bottom of the decking, an attic that is much warmer that the rest of the building and the absence of any light – indicating obstructed or absent openings. Winter cold and summer heat can greatly shorten the lifespan of asphalt roofing shingles when an attic that lacks proper air circulation.
The manufacturer’s shingle warranty may also be invalidated without proper ventilation. We adhere to the minimum requirements prescribed by Canada’s National Building Code.
Roof Deck
Before installing or replacing your roof – we carefully check your roof deck for signs of rot or warping. The roof deck needs to be flat, smooth clean, dry and secure. Shingles installed over an improperly prepared roof deck may void the manufacturer’s warranty.
Different roofing systems require different load bearing properties. The weight of the roof cladding will factor into what options are available to you. Slate, asphalt, concrete, rubber and metal all require different structural support.
Replacing your asphalt shingles with slate or clay tile could place a dangerous load on the load bearing walls or roof – leading to structural failure. In the same way, adding satellite dishes and solar panels may also test the structure’s load bearing capacity. It is always wise to speak with a qualified engineer before adding material to the roof that that may increase the roof load beyond its capacity.
